THE PINK ZINE

2021

When offered a selection of courses to take senior year of college, I opted to be in a class about the creation and exploration of Zines. The only assignment that we had the entire semester was to create a zine, which is usually known as a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images, usually reproduced via a copy machine.

I decided to cultivate a publication surrounding my favorite color; Pink. I wanted the content to beee varied, and to explore a wide range of pink things. From famous pink outfits known in pop culture, to the psychology that is often associated with pink, this zine covers it all.

This project was in response to the option to create a small publication around anything that I was passionate about. I loved the abstract concept of just collecting content that all had to do with just one color, and I have always been in love with the color pink. Last semester, I chose to print out these zines, but found it hard to photograph them and get them printed on non neon pink paper.

I found that displaying them digitally allowed for a more cohesive viewing experience with the content as the focal point, as opposed to the physicality of the object. With the style of this Zine, I attempted to mimic the style that Zines originally rose to fame in. I loved the way that there were such stark black shapes and type, and I wanted the color of the pink paper to speak for itself. When choosing content, I didn’t box myself in at all, which I often have trouble doing. I wanted this to be an organic collection of everything that makes me think of the color pink, as well as bold pink moments from society. These half-tone moments in history were placed periodically throughout the pink zine. I really liked the way some of these full page images broke up the flow of the zine, and allowed readers to stop and absorb the pink peeking through the black.

This collection of articles, large cropped images, doodles, magazine-esque type, and pink themed quotes all came together to make something I can always look back on to cherish, as well as possibly expand into a series involving all colors.
